Much of southern Florida is protected lands. State and federal preserves ensure development in the area stays in check and that the plants and wildlife have the space needed to sustain themselves.
In addition to checking out the National Parks, we also drove over to Big Cypress National Preserve and found this road that horse-shoed into it offering some pretty cool views. This included a huge alligator sunning itself but was scared away before I could get a photo.
